About Nephin Beg Special Area of Conservation

Nephin Beg Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is located in County Mayo, in the west of Ireland, encompassing parts of the Nephin Beg mountain range. This protected area spans a large expanse of upland blanket bogs, wet heath, and upland grasslands that support a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The landscape is characterized by remote, wild terrain with undisturbed peatlands – some of the most extensive in Ireland – which play a vital role in carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. The SAC was designated primarily for the protection of these habitats, including priority habitat types such as active blanket bog, degraded raised bog, and dry heath. Wildlife includes bird species such as the Hen Harrier, Merlin, and Golden Plover, which depend on this habitat for breeding and feeding. The area's rugged nature and lack of developed facilities foster a true wilderness experience, attracting hikers and wildlife watchers seeking solitude and unspoiled vistas. The Nephin mountain range itself offers challenging terrain for hillwalkers, with Nephin Beg’s soaring peaks providing scenic lookout points over surrounding bogs and distant Atlantic coastlines. Due to its remote location, access requires preparation, but the rewarding sense of isolation and intact ecology makes it a prized destination for conservationists and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
